An exceptional story that is a perfect blend of passion, humor and surprising suspense. …Yes, I blushed a bit at the intimate parts (definitely a book for adults).

A book you don’t want to put down but also don’t want to finish.

I was immediately drawn to the character and could not put the book down until I found out what happened to her.

The H and h are just so very sweet, sexy and hot.

I just finished this book and immediately looked for more books by this wonderful writer.

What is Faking Lucky about?

The story is about 26-year-old Desdemona, who’s keeping her life together in spite of her deep, hidden ache for her first love. The ache is doubly bitter because she ruined his life and hasn’t heard from him in nine years. One night she’s watching TV when a different guy she dated a year ago, shows up on a reality show. He’s with his new wife, and he announces to the world why he could never have loved Desdemona. His revelation sends Desdemona on a journey of self-exploration.

Where did you get the idea for Faking Lucky?

Three different notions that have been swirling around in my head for years:

  1. When I was a junior in high school, my class read O. Henry’s “Gift of the Magi.” In the story Della sells her long, beautiful hair to buy her husband, Jim, a chain for his watch. Jim, unknowingly, sells his watch to buy decorative silver combs for Della’s hair. This is the only story I remember out of all the stuff we read that year. The fact that their gifts to each other turn out to be useless doesn’t matter because the beauty of their love outweighs everything else. I’ve always wanted to write a story in which the guy and girl, like Della and Jim, show their love for each other in a pivotal way.

  2. I love romantic comedies that include a tragic back story such as the movie Failure to Launch. Matthew McConaughey portrays a 35-year-old who won’t move out of his parents’ home. His eventual romance and all the antics to “launch” him are so comical that it’s easy to forget the tragedy that triggered his inability to move forward with his life. In Faking Lucky, the two lead characters have each been stuck in their own separate traps for nine years following the tragedy that ripped them apart. I wanted a story that shows the values in working through bad times.

  3. And then there’s the whole faking thing! I love the way that the movie, When Harry Met Sally, brings humor into sex. My favorite scene is the one in which Meg Ryan moans and pants in the restaurant to show Harry how easily women can fake it. You’ll find some humorous sex scenes in Faking Lucky.

What other romances have you written?

The short novel, The Light We Found, is published in the collection of twelve shorts: Mother’s Day Magic. This anthology, designed to be a gift for mothers, includes thirteen award-winning authors, each contributing a story that reflects on motherhood. In my section, The Light We Found, the main character, Calla has survived divorce and developed her first newly-single crush on Ben, the special guy in her triple-two-step class. Life is rocking until her daughter shares the news of a long-hidden betrayal and Ben reveals the most hurtful secret of all.

Do you write in other genres?

Yes, under a different name, Brenda Vicars, I write YA, targeting readers in grades 8-10. The reason I use two different author names is to be sure that YA readers are not accidentally led to an adult book. My YA novel, Polarity in Motion is about fifteen-year-old Polarity Weeks, who just wants to live a normal life, but with a mother diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, that’s rarely easy. Polarity’s life gets even more disastrous when her sixth-period history classmates start ogling a nude picture of her on the Internet. She would never have struck such a shameless pose, but the photo is definitely of her, and she’s at a complete loss to explain its existence.

How do you deal with writer’s block?

I turn back to a book that has guided me for years—The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. She recommends that writers go out and experience something totally new at least one hour a week. For example, spend an hour trying to play a harmonica, take a salsa lesson, go to a woodworking shop, or do anything that’s totally new to you. I’ve used this trick before and find that after a breather and exposure to new stimuli, for some reason my brain kicks back in and is ready to write.

What do you do for fun when you aren’t writing?

Dance, dance, dance—any kind, anywhere, with anybody! Usually it’s Zumba exercise class once or twice a week, but I never miss an opportunity to move to music.

Garden! Unfortunately, here in Texas fire ants and rabbits love gardening as well, so this hobby entails great plots to beat the pesky critters to the vegetables and flowers. Tip: Basil is one plant that neither fire ants nor rabbits will eat.

Repurposed woodworking! I recently lined the bar between the kitchen and living room with repurposed wood. If you squint and breathe deeply, you can find endless stories in each stain and scratch and burn mark.

qd-1-bar_repurposed_wood Q.D. Purdu’s debut romance FAKING LUCKY, under the title of DESDEMONA FINDS THE BIG O IN LOVE, won first place in the Texas Writers’ League Romance category, 2014. Her novella THE LIGHT WE FOUND is available in the MOTHER’S DAY MAGIC anthology. MDMwhiteTHE ONE

Q. D. loves her rescued puppy, red wine, running through sprinklers, dark chocolate with sugared ginger, and anything wrapped in a corn tortilla. Her prized possessions include a hot pink Christmas tree and a garden full of okra and basil. She hasn’t decided what she’ll be when she grows up, but whatever it is will be filled with romantic impossibilities.
